The best thing I did with my family on a trip to Turks and Caicos was free -- and it involved puppies
During our recent family trip to Turks and Caicos, we were excited to discover an opportunity to volunteer at Potcake Place K9 Rescue in Providenciales, a place dedicated to rescuing stray dogs, known as potcakes. This was a welcome surprise, especially since our previous cruise visit a few years back had us on a different island without access to the shelter. As we settled into our all-inclusive resort, we planned a taxi ride into town to finally experience this rewarding activity.
A potcake is a mixed-breed dog commonly found in the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos, named after the leftovers fed to strays from local cooking pots. These dogs, while often seen roaming the streets, are not wild but rather homeless domestic pets. Potcake Place primarily relies on donations to fulfill its mission of reducing the homeless dog population through rescues and adoptions.
Arriving at Potcake Place just before 10 a.m., we joined other enthusiastic volunteers. After completing a short form, we were introduced to Heidi, a playful black-and-white puppy just a few months old. Equipped with essentials like treats and waste bags, we were eager to take Heidi for a walk around the town, following helpful guidelines provided by the staff.
Our morning with Heidi was a delightful adventure, allowing us to explore downtown Providenciales while bonding with our furry companion. We grabbed coffee at a local café, shopped for souvenirs, and enjoyed the scenic lawns of the Ritz Carlton, all while keeping Heidi happily engaged by our side. She was a joyful pup, and although she needed a few breaks, that only added to the fun of the experience.
Reflecting on our time spent at Potcake Place, it was truly a rewarding way to enjoy a morning in Providenciales. The staff also offered guidance for potential dog adoptions, which left me contemplating bringing Heidi back to Florida one day. If we return to Turks and Caicos in the future, I will certainly make plans to volunteer again and aim to fly with a dog-friendly airline.
