Annual Good Riddance Day in Times Square invites participants to start 2025 with a clean slate
NEW YORK -- For nearly two decades, New York City has hosted its annual Good Riddance Day, a unique event that allows participants to release negative experiences and emotions as they look forward to a better new year. The event's theme this year, "Wiping the slate clean for 2025," encouraged attendees to write down what they want to leave behind on mini chalkboards and then erase those thoughts, symbolizing a fresh start.
Times Square was bustling with activity as participants actively engaged in the creative process, even utilizing technology to share their messages. By scanning a QR code, they could see their sentiments displayed on large screens in the iconic location. "We've burned things, we've smashed things, and this is the new rendition where we have a QR code. We're very high-tech this year," remarked Times Square Alliance President Tom Harris, highlighting the evolution of the event.
The messages varied greatly, with many expressing a desire to let go of personal struggles. For example, 13-year-old Mason Riddle from Alabama expressed a wish to end the daily arguments with his mother, a sentiment echoed by his mom, Jessica, who hopes to leave behind her self-doubt as a single parent. "As a single mom, I doubt myself every single day and just wanna enjoy life," she shared.
Beyond familial conflicts, participants also aimed to eliminate negativity in their lives. John Pevsner from Brooklyn articulated his desire to cut ties with toxic individuals and hoped for financial improvement. Others, like Bronx resident Sarah Roman, found relief in the act of discarding their burdens. "It was awesome just getting rid of that feeling, like just throwing it away," she noted.
As the event continued into the evening, attendees braved the rain to participate, reflecting a collective yearning for personal growth and improved circumstances. With each erased message, they symbolically shed their burdens, embracing the hope of a more fulfilling year ahead.
