Coloradans helped by former President Jimmy Carter react to his passing
Mario Mora from Denver's Globeville neighborhood was overcome with emotion upon hearing about the death of former President Jimmy Carter on Sunday. Holding back tears, he expressed a deep sense of loss and intention to pray for Carter, recalling the profound impact the former president had on his life. In 2013, Carter visited Denver to work with Habitat for Humanity and personally assisted the Moras, enhancing their home with significant improvements and even gifting them a Bible.
The kindness and generosity demonstrated by Carter left a lasting impression on Mora and his wife, Phyllis. During that visit, Carter and volunteers helped repair their driveway, garage, and added a back porch, making life easier for the couple, particularly for Phyllis, who has some mobility challenges. The ramp built by Carter has been beneficial not only for Phyllis but also for their friends who visit.
Laura Willetto, a spokesperson for Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver, highlighted President Carter's tireless advocacy for affordable housing and community service, emphasizing his commitment to social justice over many years. Staff who worked closely with him recalled his humility and compassion, noting how he engaged with everyone warmly and actively participated in building homes well into his 90s.
Beyond his volunteer work, President Carter frequently returned to Colorado for various charitable causes, including raising support for handicapped skiers and promoting solar energy. His positive leadership style, especially during a tumultuous period in American history, is remembered fondly by many, including Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib, who praised his enduring spirit of service.
Mario Mora, although heartbroken by Carter's passing, expressed gratitude for the former president's life and contributions. "My prayers are with the family. May he rest in peace," he said, reflecting on the significant legacy Carter leaves behind as a humanitarian and advocate for those in need.
