Fitchburg High School band members to march in 2025 Rose Parade in California
Eleven members of Fitchburg High School's marching band are enjoying a unique opportunity in southern California as they prepare to perform in the prestigious 136th Rose Parade. These talented students are part of the New England Honor Band, one of only 20 bands worldwide selected to be part of this celebrated event, which takes place before the Rose Bowl game on New Year's Day in Pasadena.
Representing all six states in New England, the New England Honor Band comprises approximately 300 students. The Fitchburg musicians have been diligently rehearsing for the demanding 5.5-mile parade route, practicing their music while walking laps around their school cafeteria to ensure they're physically prepared for the performance.
"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Fitchburg High School band director Tabitha Greenlees. "Most bands do not get to participate in the Tournament of Roses Parade, and for our students to represent their own communities and New England as a whole is truly spectacular."
The New England Honor Band is scheduled to perform around 12:12 p.m. Massachusetts time on January 1, wearing historical outfits reminiscent of those worn by military musicians during the American Revolution. This marks a notable representation for Massachusetts at the parade, which also saw participation from the Fitchburg High School marching band in 1962—the first high school band from the state to take part.
In 2018, Massachusetts had the UMass Minuteman marching band featured in the parade, highlighting the state's proud tradition of marching band excellence. The excitement building around this year's event underscores the importance of the experience for the students, their school, and their region.
