Hundreds spend New Year's taking Polar Plunge in Waukegan, Illinois

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (CBS) -- Hundreds of brave participants celebrated the New Year on Wednesday by plunging into the chilly waters of Lake Michigan, with temperatures hovering just under 40 degrees. Despite the snow-covered sand and icy conditions, the 26th Annual Waukegan Polar Plunge drew a spirited crowd ready to embrace the cold.

Dressed in varying attire, from Speedos to multiple pairs of socks, plunger reactions ranged from humorous remarks about the cold to light-hearted challenges in navigating the freezing water. One participant quipped about the frigid temperatures, while another recalled a minor mishap as she fell in the sand before persevering to join her fellow plungers.

Every participant contributed financially to join in the brisk event, with proceeds benefiting the Special Recreation Services of Northern Lake County, which offers essential programs such as camps and sports for the community. This charitable aspect underscores the purpose behind the icy plunge beyond the thrill of the experience.
