President Biden will present the Presidential Citizens Medal to former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., and Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., acknowledging their leadership in the congressional investigation of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. This medal, the second-highest civilian honor, recognizes Americans who have demonstrated exceptional service to their country. By honoring Cheney and Thompson, Biden sends a clear message to President-elect Trump, who has frequently criticized the two for their role in the investigation.

The White House emphasized that Biden believes both Cheney and Thompson exemplify common decency and dedication to serving others, stating, "The country is better because of their dedication and sacrifice." In addition to Cheney and Thompson, Biden plans to award the medal to several civil rights leaders and advocates. Notable among the honorees are Biden's longtime friends, former Senators Ted Kaufman and Chris Dodd.

In total, Biden will award the Citizens Medal to 20 individuals, building on last year’s recognition of 14 people for their efforts to protect the Capitol during the insurrection and ensuring the integrity of the 2020 election process. Cheney, a Republican, was one of only two members from her party on the January 6 committee, which concluded that Trump should face prosecution on several serious charges related to his actions surrounding the attack.

The committee's recommendations included charges of obstruction of an official proceeding and conspiracy to defraud the United States, among others. Trump, set to take office on January 20, has expressed intentions to pardon some individuals involved in the January 6 events and has dismissed the committee's findings while targeting Cheney with attacks on social media.

The awarding of the Presidential Citizens Medal serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who defend democratic principles, especially in the face of challenges to the electoral process. Cheney and Thompson's recognition reflects a commitment to upholding accountability and civility in public service.
