Biden awards Presidential Citizens Medal to Liz Cheney, Bennie Thompson, who led Jan. 6 select committee
President Biden recently honored Rep. Bennie Thompson and former Rep. Liz Cheney, who chaired the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol, with the prestigious Presidential Citizens Medal. The awards were presented during a ceremony at the White House, where the President recognized Thompson, Cheney, and more than a dozen other recipients for their exemplary service to democracy.
During the event, Biden emphasized the importance of honoring those who defended the Capitol and upheld the integrity of the 2020 election. He praised the new group of medal recipients for their dedication to serving the American public. Cheney received recognition for prioritizing the American people over her political party, while Thompson was honored for his long-standing commitment to protecting the Constitution.
The Presidential Citizens Medal is awarded to individuals who have performed outstanding deeds of service for their country. The White House noted Thompson's unwavering dedication to upholding the rule of law and Cheney's integrity in defending national ideals throughout her 20 years in public service. Their bipartisan leadership on the Jan. 6 committee involved extensive hearings and investigations that ultimately led to referrals for criminal prosecution of major figures involved in the Capitol attack.
Cheney has become increasingly vocal against Trump following the 2020 election, earning his ire as he accused her and Thompson of wrongdoing without evidence. In light of ongoing discussions about potential retribution against political adversaries, Biden is reportedly considering preemptive pardons for several key figures, including Cheney and others scrutinized by the former President.
In addition to Thompson and Cheney, the ceremony featured other honorees such as Mary Bonauto, who played a significant role in legalizing same-sex marriage, and former senators Chris Dodd, Nancy Kassebaum, and Ted Kaufman. The Presidential Citizens Medal, established in 1969, is the second-highest civilian award in the U.S. and celebrates those who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to service.
