Altadena man's massive model train set turns his home into popular holiday destination
Every holiday season, Christmas Tree Lane becomes a must-visit destination for model train enthusiasts, thanks to Rob Caves, who transformed his hobby into a cherished holiday attraction. Caves began crafting model train sets in San Diego in 2010, and over the years, his passion has blossomed into an impressive display that captivates visitors.
The intricate model train layout spans a fictional journey from San Diego to Seattle, all within the confines of Caves' home. As the train runs, it passes by recognizable landmarks such as the San Clemente Pier and downtown LA's Union Station, evoking nostalgia for many viewers. "I think the track represents places we've all been," Caves shared, expressing how the experience brings back fond memories of childhood trips and experiences.
Initially, Caves' project started on a much smaller scale, but it has now expanded to a sprawling layout measuring 60 feet by 90 feet. To enhance the details, he utilizes a 3-D printer to create miniature trains and landmarks. The Christmas Tree Lane Model Railroad Society assists him in maintaining the extensive setup, comprising around 50 members, including young train enthusiast Logan Montori.
Among club members is Tom Selinske, who notes the increasing technological advancements in model trains, such as microchips that enable sound effects and more intricate operations. "Keeping up with the technology is one of the fun things to keep learning about," he remarked, highlighting the ongoing evolution of the hobby.
Caves opens his home every holiday season, delighting in the joy his model train display brings to visitors. "It just makes our day to see the kids run up and look at the train," he said, emphasizing that everyone, regardless of age, taps into their inner child during their visit. This year, the last opportunity to experience the enchanting exhibit will be this Saturday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. at 2085 Santa Rosa Avenue.
