On the day Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson declared "Derrick Rose Day," the Chicago Bulls announced their decision to retire Rose's jersey. The ceremony is set for the 2025-26 season, with specific details to be released later. Rose's No. 1 will be the fifth jersey retired by the Bulls, joining legends like Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.

Bulls president and CEO Michael Reinsdorf made the announcement during an in-person event in Chicago. Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf expressed the profound significance of this honor, emphasizing Rose's unique connection to the city and the franchise. He stated that retiring a jersey is not just about on-court success, but also about the lasting impact a player has on the team's identity and its fans.

Derrick Rose, who was drafted first overall in 2008, quickly became a star in Chicago, winning Rookie of the Year and becoming the youngest MVP in NBA history in 2011. He spent eight impactful seasons with the Bulls, leading the team to a franchise-best record of 62-20 that year, despite facing serious injuries, including missing the entire 2012-13 season.

Over his time with the Bulls, Rose played in 406 regular season games, averaging 19.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 6.2 assists. In the playoffs, he maintained impressive averages, cementing his status as one of the franchise’s greats. Michael Reinsdorf remarked on Rose's humility and the honor of getting to know him as a person beyond his athletic achievements.

The day culminated in the celebration of "Derrick Rose Night" at the Bulls' home game against the Knicks, featuring tributes to Rose, his family, and former teammates, showcasing the deep love and respect Chicago holds for its hometown hero.
