Nicole Roberts, a dedicated committeewoman from South Jersey, is set to make history as the first Black woman to take the oath of mayor in Pennsauken Township on Tuesday night. Excited about her new role, Roberts expressed her gratitude for the trust placed in her. "I feel very humbled and honored to be trusted with that position," she stated.

At 61 years old, Roberts has a strong background in breaking barriers, having previously made history in 2020 as the first Black woman on the township committee. Her passion for public service was inspired by her experiences with the Homestead Youth Association, a nonprofit that introduced her to community engagement through various activities like skating, bowling, and camping.

Roberts has been recognized for her leadership and contribution to the community, being awarded the Camden County Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Medal in 2023. As she prepares to take office, her primary focus will be on enhancing the quality of life for the township's 37,000 residents, particularly by improving outdoor spaces.

Key projects on her agenda include a $30 million library and municipal building, funded by state and federal grants, set to be completed this summer, and a $20 million community center which will serve as a gathering place for families, with a portion of the costs also covered by grants.

As a mother of four and grandmother, Roberts aims to serve as a role model for young girls, encouraging them to believe in their potential. Drawing strength from her heritage and the influential Black women in her life, she aims to inspire future generations to reach for their dreams.
