80-year-old Louisiana teacher gets surprise of a lifetime: "Prayers get answered"
Frances Shaw, a cherished chemistry teacher at Northside High School in Lafayette, Louisiana, retired in 2012 but returned to the classroom last year at the age of 80 due to a teacher shortage. Known for her remarkable influence on students and her early role in integrating the school, Shaw expressed her eagerness to return, recognizing the unique opportunity she represented as an experienced educator.
Shaw's dedication has left a substantial impact on her students, who view her not just as a teacher but as an integral part of their lives. Through anecdotes shared by her students, like Mya, who received a helping hand to vote, and A'zeviel, who highlighted Shaw's multi-generational influence on countless families, it's evident that her contributions extend far beyond the classroom.
To honor her commitment to education, CBS News and current and former students organized a pep rally, where Shaw was celebrated as a "Louisiana treasure." The event was filled with joy as local dignitaries presented her with accolades, including the proclamation of November 14, 2024, as Frances Shaw Day, acknowledging her lifelong dedication.
The surprises continued when Canva, a digital design platform, gifted Shaw $25,000 and established The Frances Davis Shaw Community Impact Fund, amounting to $75,000, for community initiatives. In addition, the Love Our Schools Foundation announced a $100,000 investment in Northside High School, prompting a jubilant response from Shaw and her students.
The celebration culminated in a spirited dance to the "Cupid Shuffle," a fitting tribute as its creator, Bryson Bernard, is a former student of Shaw. Through emotional connections and community support, Shaw's legacy as a teacher and mentor continues to flourish, reinforcing the power of education in shaping lives.
