WELLESLEY - A Wellesley father of three, Ed Berger, and his dog Tommy were rescued from a freezing lake after a dramatic incident on Sunday. Drone footage captured first responders crawling across thin ice to reach them in Lake Waban. The trouble began when Tommy, an 8-year-old Cockapoo, jumped into the icy water after a flock of birds.

In a heroic effort, Ed attempted to save his dog by taking a boat from Wellesley College, putting his cold-water training to the test. However, the boat capsized, plunging both Ed and Tommy into the frigid water. "I knew I had to do something," Ed reflected on the traumatic experience, acknowledging that he both acted wisely and made mistakes during the rescue attempt.

Firefighters and police quickly responded, rescuing Ed first before returning for Tommy. Despite Ed's insistence that the firefighters prioritize his dog, they adhered to their protocol of saving human lives first. Both were eventually brought to safety, with Tommy receiving medical attention for hypothermia at the Veterinary Emergency Group.

Dr. Allan Heuerman, who treated Tommy, expressed relief that the dog, a fighter, was able to endure the ordeal. The incident highlights the risks associated with being on the ice, especially during cold temperatures. Wellesley Fire Chief Matthew Corda cautioned against venturing onto frozen water, as hidden dangers can lead to tragic outcomes.

Reflecting on the rescue, Ed expressed immense gratitude for the first responders and medical staff who saved them, emphasizing the importance of keeping pets leashed and avoiding direct action on the ice. The day ended on a hopeful note, showcasing the effectiveness of quick thinking and teamwork in emergencies.
