Dawn Staley's $25M extension is richest salary in women's college hoops history, South Carolina says
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina coach Dawn Staley received a contract extension on Friday, making her the highest-paid coach in women's college basketball history, valued at approximately $25 million. The new deal extends through the 2029-30 season and begins with an annual salary of $4 million, plus a $250,000 annual increase, and includes a $500,000 signing bonus.
Athletics director Jeremiah Donati praised Staley, calling her a "once-in-a-generation coach" who has significantly impacted the University of South Carolina and elevated the profile of women's basketball both nationally and on campus. Staley's achievements include leading the Gamecocks to six Final Fours in the last nine years, securing national championships in 2017, 2022, and 2024, and the team currently being ranked second in the AP poll.
Staley expressed pride in her team's accomplishments, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among players, the university, and the community in achieving success. She is optimistic about the future and believes that investing in women's basketball will yield positive outcomes for all stakeholders involved.
Former players, like Aliyah Boston, expressed their excitement about Staley's extension, acknowledging her contributions to the sport and her advocacy for women in athletics. They highlighted Staley's player-centered coaching style and her extensive experience as both an athlete and a coach.
The Gamecocks continue to lead the nation in attendance, having sold out of season tickets for the first time in program history, with 13,152 sold this year, reflecting the growing support for women's basketball at South Carolina.
