Kyrstin Johnson, Temple University gymnast, opens up about viral hip-hop floor routine
Temple gymnast Kyrstin Johnson has captured the attention of social media with her dynamic floor routine that celebrates hip-hop and Black culture. Her performance, set to Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us," showcases not only her athletic talent but also her individuality and joy in gymnastics. “Being able to be myself,” Johnson emphasized, reflects the essence of her routine.
Johnson attributes her success to staying true to herself and having fun while performing. The choice of music is particularly significant for her as it connects to her roots at Talladega College, Alabama’s oldest private historically Black liberal arts institution, where she first embraced her identity. Although she experiences nerves, she remains focused on living in the moment, especially in her current setting at Temple University.
Her viral routine, posted on January 5, has garnered over 160,000 views on TikTok, with clips spreading to various social media platforms. This surge in attention showcases not only her skill but also the resonance of her message with viewers, who find inspiration in her expressive style.
In addition to her athletic prowess, Johnson highlights the importance of her hair and crown as symbols of her confidence. She hopes to inspire young girls by demonstrating that they can fully embrace their identities while pursuing their passions. “I want to show little girls you can do the same thing as well. I am seriously in love with my hair,” she remarked.
Looking ahead, Johnson will compete with her team from February 2-8 at McGonigle Hall, confidently showcasing her talent and unique flair. Her journey not only emphasizes the artistry of gymnastics but also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of self-acceptance and cultural pride in sports.
