MINNEAPOLIS -- Communities in Minnesota and around the globe are celebrating the Lunar New Year on January 29, which this year welcomes the Year of the Snake. This festive occasion is observed in various Asian countries including China, Vietnam, Korea, and Taiwan, and has a significant presence in the Twin Cities.

One of the standout traditions of the Lunar New Year is the lion dance, a performance that symbolizes good luck and prosperity. In the Twin Cities, the DTG Lions group is celebrated for its vibrant performances, featuring talented young dancers dedicated to preserving this cultural art form. They have several upcoming performances around the area, including shows at the University of Minnesota and Hamline University.

Additionally, the Korean American Association of Minnesota, along with JangmiArts Performance Group, will host its annual Seollal Lunar New Year celebration on February 1 at White Bear Lake High School. This event, running from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., combines cultural festivities with a fundraiser and includes traditional Korean foods, shopping, activities, and live entertainment.

Meanwhile, in celebration of the Chinese New Year, the Saturday Dumpling Company is reintroducing its special collaboration with renowned local chef Diane Mua, featuring Hmong sausage dumplings. The eatery, which opened its first storefront location in Minneapolis last November, is geared up to enhance the holiday festivities with this unique offering.

As communities come together to celebrate Lunar New Year traditions, they highlight the rich cultural diversity and shared merriment within the Twin Cities, embodying the spirit of hope and renewal that the new year brings.
