Students gain access to Colorado slopes via Bison Blizzard Club

When people think of Colorado, skiing and snowboarding often come to mind. Yet, not every resident has the opportunity to hit the slopes due to various barriers such as cost, distance, or lack of resources. This is where the Bison Blizzard Club comes into play, aimed at providing access to these winter sports for underprivileged students.

Sam Haven, an instructor at Vista PEAK Preparatory School, founded the club to help students experience snow sports. He highlights the financial challenges many students face, stating that the costs associated with ski gear and lift tickets can be prohibitive. Echo Mountain, the club’s chosen destination, offers affordable ticket prices, making it an accessible option for these budding winter sports enthusiasts.

The Bison Blizzard Club funds its activities through donations and student-led fundraising efforts, which help cover transportation and gear costs. Member Isabella Sanchez emphasizes how the club opens doors for kids who otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to ski or snowboard, while also fostering confidence and camaraderie among participants.

For many members, including Gradi Lanongo and Dakota Hill Gadd, the club is more than just about skiing; it contributes to personal growth and resilience. The experience of facing fears on the slopes translates into tackling challenges in everyday life, reinforcing lessons about courage and perseverance.

Beyond the on-slope experience, the club creates lasting bonds among students. As they share humorous moments and challenges faced during their outings, they strengthen their connections, making the Bison Blizzard Club a unique social and developmental platform within their school community. Lanongo encourages others to take the leap and join, reflecting the transformative power of the club and skiing as a whole.
