Michigan Catholic bishops urge support for immigrant families
The Roman Catholic bishops of Michigan have collectively issued a letter expressing their continued support for migrant individuals and families residing in the state. This letter, made public by the Michigan Catholic Conference, was authored by prominent church leaders, including the Most Rev. Allen Vigneron, Archbishop of Detroit, along with bishops from various dioceses throughout Michigan.
The Michigan Catholic Conference acts as the official voice of the Church regarding public policy, addressing numerous advocacy issues. In their letter, the bishops acknowledge the anxiety and fear felt by many families due to threats of mass deportations and negative rhetoric aimed at immigrants. They emphasize their commitment to uphold the human dignity of all migrants and to offer unwavering support in an uncertain climate.
In addition to offering pastoral care, the bishops call upon elected officials to endorse policies that maintain the safety and unity of immigrant and undocumented families. They further advocate for the protection of those who came to the United States as children, urging for legislative efforts that reflect compassion and humanity.
The letter highlights the need for the Michigan Congressional delegation to engage in creating a fair and humane immigration system. This system should facilitate a pathway to citizenship for refugees and immigrants while ensuring border security against criminal activities like human trafficking and drug smuggling.
Concluding the letter, the bishops extend wishes of peace, faith, and hope to migrant individuals and families, alongside a prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe, seeking divine intercession for all who are in need.
