Pilot shares heartfelt commitment to passengers' safety after tragic American Airlines crash

In a heartfelt pre-flight announcement, an American Airlines pilot sought to reassure passengers after a tragic airport collision that resulted in the deaths of 67 individuals earlier that week. Captain Jeffrey Collins addressed passengers on flight 1044 from Jacksonville to Miami, acknowledging their potential fears about flying while emphasizing the safety and security of the flight crew.

Medea Mixon, a passenger on the flight, recorded and shared the pilot's comforting words on social media. Captain Collins assured everyone that their safety was the crew’s top priority. "I have no higher calling than carefully, professionally transporting you today," he said, encouraging passengers to relax and enjoy the flight as they prepared for take-off.

The tragic incident involved a regional jet colliding with an Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, marking the first major commercial airline crash in the United States since 2009. The jet, which had taken off from Wichita, Kansas, was approaching the airport when the collision occurred, leading to the aircraft breaking into multiple pieces in the Potomac River.

Mixon, who was on his way to vacation, expressed the unsettling impact of the crash, stating that such events can rattle even seasoned airline employees.
