Twelve of the Colorado city of Aurora's 103 developed parks are getting major facelifts
The city of Aurora is set to enhance twelve of its 103 developed parks with significant renovations. Nichole Ankeney, Manager of Planning Design and Construction for the city's Parks Recreation and Open Space Department, emphasized the importance of these upgrades for the community. The improvements will include new playgrounds, updated basketball courts and ballfields, as well as new pavilions and seating areas.
A key focus of these renovations is ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Ankeney noted that many older playgrounds lack accessible walkways, which affects individuals who use mobility devices. The aim is to create a welcoming environment that allows everyone, regardless of ability, to enjoy the parks.
Funding for these projects primarily comes from the American Rescue Plan Act. Although recent concerns arose following an executive order from President Trump that paused federal grants, that order has since been rescinded. Ankeney stated that the city is coordinating with officials to monitor how these changes might impact the renovations.
Construction is already underway at some parks, while others are poised to break ground soon. Ankeney affirmed the city's commitment to providing high-quality recreational facilities, such as shelters and ADA-compliant walkways, to meet the needs of Aurora residents.
All renovations are anticipated to be completed by December 2026, marking a significant investment in the city's recreational infrastructure.
