Duquesne University Acrobatics and Tumbling team prepared for inaugural match
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Duquesne University has recently introduced an exciting new women's sport: acrobatics and tumbling. This dynamic sport blends elements of competition cheerleading and gymnastics, appealing to women who want to continue showcasing their athleticism through acrobatics and stunts. Over the past five years, the sport has rapidly gained popularity, expanding from just 20 teams nationwide to 56.
This year, Duquesne University established its own acrobatics and tumbling team, led by Head Coach Michaela Soper. She has assembled a roster of 33 freshman athletes who began their training in August. The team is set to make its debut at their first meet on February 7 at the UPMC Cooper Field House in Oakland.
Michaela Soper brings a wealth of experience to her coaching role, having previously competed in acrobatics and tumbling after a career-ending gymnastics injury. Her journey into coaching began at Limestone University, where she successfully built a program from the ground up. Soper is enthusiastic about the historic significance of her team’s formation at Duquesne and recognizes the impact her athletes are making as pioneers of this new sport.
Team member Abigail Eberle shared her excitement about seizing the opportunity to participate in a new sport, especially in her hometown. She expressed her desire to continue competing at the collegiate level while staying local, making the experience even more meaningful for her and her teammates.
With nearly six months of preparation behind them, the athletes are eager to showcase their skills at their upcoming meet. The enthusiasm and commitment of the team highlight the promising future of acrobatics and tumbling at Duquesne University.
