Colorado city hopes to pay it forward with free coffee through a network of coffee shops
In Boulder, a heartwarming pay-it-forward trend is gaining momentum as locals are offering free cups of coffee to those in need. This movement is embodied by Ruzo Coffee, owned by Jordan McDaniel, who aims to capture the essence of Boulder in every cup. McDaniel, a lifelong resident, is focused on creating a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the community’s spirit.
To foster a sense of generosity, Ruzo Coffee has implemented a pre-pay system, allowing customers to buy coffees or meals in advance for anyone who may be struggling financially. McDaniel noted that many have responded positively to this initiative, with both homeless individuals and students benefiting from the contributions on the wall. “It’s a kind thing to do,” he remarked, highlighting the community's supportive response.
The initiative is also supported by Hanging Coffees Boulder, an organization founded by April Lee. This group is working to spread the concept across various coffee shops in Boulder. Lee initially sought input from a local Facebook group, which received an enthusiastic response from residents eager to see this kindness replicated.
Currently, Hanging Coffees has established itself in two locations—Ruzo Coffee and Myco Cafe—with plans for expansion. Lee envisions a robust network of participating coffee shops throughout Boulder, aiming to create a map that covers the entire city with these kindness initiatives.
Beyond expanding Hanging Coffees, Lee hopes to inspire other community members to launch similar pay-it-forward programs. She expressed her joy in witnessing the community's willingness to donate and support one another, emphasizing the profound impact of small acts of kindness.
