Monroe County volunteers crafting beds for kids in need
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that no child has to sleep on the floor, with a chapter actively working in Monroe County. The organization focuses on providing beds for kids who lack proper sleeping arrangements, and their mission resonates deeply with volunteers and community members alike.
Recently, the Monroe County team completed its first bed delivery after an intensive build event where hundreds of volunteers contributed their time and effort. The impact of this work is profound, as expressed by volunteer Jessica Sawyer, who highlighted the significance of providing a safe and comfortable sleeping environment for children who may have been without one for an extended period.
During the initial build, the team successfully constructed 63 beds, but they are still facing a significant need in the community, with over 130 beds required. Volunteer Sara Ritchie emphasized the importance of a child's bed as a place of safety, stressing how crucial it is to offer this security to others. The organization believes that having a proper bed is linked not only to better health outcomes but also to improved academic performance.
In collaboration with nonprofit Reaching for Revival, Sleep in Heavenly Peace is also working on providing children with free libraries filled with donated books. Founder Andrew Curtis noted that books can serve as an escape and foster imagination, helping children envision a brighter future regardless of their circumstances.
Volunteers take pride in their contributions, with team lead Korey Begeman remarking on the uniqueness of each bed created. The experience of volunteering brings joy and fulfillment, as each bed represents hope and a new beginning for the children in need.
