Denver memorial to honor former DU Chancellor Daniel Ritchie

A memorial service will be held next week at the University of Denver to honor the life of former Chancellor Daniel Ritchie, who passed away last week at the age of 93. Ritchie, who served as DU's 16th chancellor from 1989 to 2005, was instrumental in helping the university recover from financial challenges and is credited with raising over $400 million for new facilities and infrastructure.
Current Chancellor Jeremy Haefner expressed deep sorrow over Ritchie's passing, noting that DU has lost its greatest friend and champion. He described Ritchie as a loyal friend, wise counselor, and unparalleled role model who profoundly impacted those who knew him.
Ritchie was not only a dedicated education leader but also an accomplished entrepreneur. He served as vice president of MCA Inc. and later as CEO of Westinghouse Broadcasting and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, where he worked without a salary. His philanthropic work included leading the Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation and securing scholarships for aspiring college students.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis praised Ritchie's contributions, stating that his efforts at DU significantly shaped Colorado's higher education landscape and positively impacted countless students and staff. Ritchie's commitment to making Colorado a better place was evident throughout his career.
The public memorial will take place at Magness Arena, located at 2250 E Jewell Ave, starting at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 13. All are welcome to pay their respects and celebrate Ritchie's remarkable legacy.
