Chiefs receiver Xavier Worthy is arrested in Texas on a family violence assault charge

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Kansas City Chiefs rookie Xavier Worthy was arrested on a felony domestic violence charge, marking the second incident involving a high-profile wide receiver from the reigning AFC champions facing legal issues in Texas within the year. Worthy, who was taken by the Chiefs with the 28th overall pick in the last NFL draft, was incarcerated in Williamson County for allegedly choking a household member, a serious charge under Texas law.

Worthy's arrest, which occurred on Friday, came after deputies responded to an incident at his home in Williamson County, an area that includes parts of Austin, where he played college football at the University of Texas. According to his attorneys, Worthy is innocent and claims the allegations stem from an ongoing dispute with a former inhabitant of his residence who was asked to leave due to infidelity.

His lawyers allege that the woman not only refused to leave but also engaged in extortionate behavior prior to making the assault claim. They indicated that there was photographic evidence of damage caused by the woman to Worthy's property, as well as physical altercations that resulted in injuries to him. Despite the gravity of the situation, Worthy reportedly declined to press charges against the woman when law enforcement arrived.

The Chiefs acknowledged being aware of the situation and stated they are still gathering pertinent information. The charge against Worthy is classified as a third-degree felony in Texas, which carries penalties of two to ten years in prison, although he has yet to post bond as of Saturday morning.

Worthy had a promising start to his NFL career, quickly emerging as a key player for the Chiefs, especially following injuries to teammates. His remarkable performance during the Super Bowl, where he amassed 157 receiving yards and two touchdowns, further solidified his role as a vital asset to the team. This incident follows another concerning case involving teammate Rashee Rice, who faces multiple legal challenges stemming from a high-speed car crash in March 2024.
