A drive-by shooting at a Chilton County farm on Friday left two horses injured and their owners in shock. The incident occurred at approximately 5 p.m. on the couple's 13-acre property along County Road 350 in Clanton while they were feeding their horses. Peggy Verdonck Riley recounted the frightening experience, noting that she instinctively dropped to the ground when she heard the gunshots, narrowly avoiding harm as one of the horses jumped over her in fear.

Law enforcement discovered 11 shell casings at the scene, highlighting the seriousness of the incident. The couple's horses, Joy and Milah, were not as fortunate, as both sustained gunshot wounds—Joy near the shoulder and Milah in the right knee. Despite their injuries, both horses are expected to survive thanks to timely veterinary care that includes antibiotics and pain medication.

The couple expressed their relief at being unharmed but are now grappling with feelings of insecurity. "It makes us feel really unsafe," Riley said, explaining that every passing vehicle raises anxiety about a potential repeat of the terrifying event. The couple's lives are deeply intertwined with their horses, and they are pushing for justice against the shooter.

Authorities quickly apprehended 28-year-old Steven Robertson, charging him with multiple offenses, including two counts of killing or disabling livestock. The couple's desire for justice is coupled with gratitude that the outcome was not more tragic, as Riley emphasized the potential severity of the injuries that could have occurred.

As the couple focuses on healing their beloved horses, they remain vigilant and hopeful for a resolution to the frightening ordeal. X-rays were scheduled for Saturday night to assess the full extent of their horses' injuries, while they continue to care for them and navigate the emotional aftermath of the shooting.
