Chiefs receiver Xavier Worthy is arrested in Texas on a family violence assault charge

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs rookie Xavier Worthy has been arrested on a felony domestic violence charge, marking another legal issue for a prominent wide receiver from the reigning AFC champions in Texas within the past year. Worthy was arrested Friday in Williamson County on a charge of assault involving a family or household member, where breathing was reportedly impeded.
Worthy’s attorneys have asserted his innocence, stating the allegation stems from a female acquaintance who had been residing with him. According to the lawyers, she was asked to leave multiple times after her alleged infidelity, leading to what they describe as extortion attempts before she made the domestic violence claim. They claim that she caused damage to his property and physically harmed him, actions which they say are documented with photographic evidence.
The Chiefs organization acknowledged they are aware of the situation and are in the process of gathering details. Under Texas law, the crime of impeding breathing can lead to serious consequences, including a third-degree felony charge with potential penalties of two to ten years in prison. As of Saturday morning, Worthy had not posted bond, and specific details about his arrest were not yet available.
Worthy, selected as the 28th overall pick in last year’s draft, showed great promise early in his career, notably scoring two touchdowns in his NFL debut. He quickly became a key player for the Chiefs, finishing the season with impressive statistics, including 59 receptions for 638 yards and six touchdowns, even contributing significantly in the Super Bowl against Philadelphia.
This incident follows the legal troubles faced by another Chiefs wide receiver, Rashee Rice, who was involved in a serious car crash in March 2024. The situation has cast a shadow over the Chiefs as they grapple with off-field challenges while striving for on-field success.
