AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Xavier Worthy, a wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, was released from custody after the Williamson County District Attorney's office decided not to pursue felony domestic violence charges against him. District Attorney Shawn Dick stated that his team had consulted with witnesses and found insufficient grounds to proceed with the case. Worthy was arrested on Friday for allegedly assaulting a family or household member, specifically for choking, but the charge was later dismissed.

The incident involved a female who had been living in Worthy's home. According to his attorneys, Chip Lewis and Sam Bassett, the woman was asked to leave multiple times due to her infidelity and resorted to making baseless accusations against Worthy when she refused to vacate. They also claimed that she exhibited aggressive behavior, including damaging property and physically harming Worthy, for which there is photographic evidence. Worthy reportedly expressed to law enforcement that he did not wish to press charges against her.

The Chiefs issued a statement acknowledging the situation and indicated they are still in the process of gathering facts. Under Texas law, the charge of impeding breathing involves knowingly obstructing someone’s ability to breathe or circulate blood by applying pressure to their throat or neck.

Worthy was drafted 28th overall by the Chiefs in the previous year and quickly made an impact on the team, scoring two touchdowns in his NFL debut. Throughout the season, he emerged as a key player, finishing with 59 receptions for 638 yards and six touchdowns. His performance in the Super Bowl included eight catches for 157 yards and two touchdowns, showcasing his crucial role in the team's offensive strategy, especially after the injury of fellow wide receiver Rashee Rice.

Meanwhile, Rice, who had an impressive rookie season, is facing multiple civil lawsuits and criminal charges following a high-speed car crash in March 2024. He admitted to being the driver of the Lamborghini involved in the incident, which has further complicated the Chiefs' wide receiver situation as they continue to navigate injuries and legal challenges within the team.
