OCOEE, Fla. - Ocoee police recently recognized Darren Fink for his courageous actions in apprehending a man suspected of attacking and killing a woman outside a Planet Fitness gym last year. The incident occurred on the morning of March 1, 2024, when officers were alerted to a disturbance in the gym's parking lot.

Upon arrival, police found Jessica L. Steigelman from Winter Garden unresponsive and severely injured on the ground. She was quickly transported to a hospital but unfortunately later succumbed to her injuries. Bystanders, including Fink, had already detained the suspect, Shannon W. King, 55, from Orlando, prior to the police's arrival.

During a ceremony, Ocoee police presented Fink with the Chief's Special Award for his heroism. According to the police department's statement, Fink intervened by pulling the attacker away from Steigelman and restraining him until law enforcement could take over. Another bystander also provided life-saving aid to the victim during this critical time.

Shannon W. King has since been charged with first-degree murder with a weapon related to Steigelman's death. The swift actions of Fink and the other good Samaritan played a crucial role in preventing further harm and assisting the victim before emergency services arrived.

The police department expressed gratitude for the bravery shown by Fink and the unnamed gentleman, highlighting the importance of community involvement in emergency situations. Their timely response undoubtedly made a significant impact on the tragic event that unfolded that day.
