Authorities investigating inmate homicide at Kern Valley State Prison

KERN COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- A homicide investigation is underway by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation following the death of an inmate at Kern Valley State Prison. The incident occurred Friday evening when 43-year-old Gilbert Garcia and 33-year-old Rodolfo Cortez were seen attacking another inmate.
Prison staff quickly intervened to stop the assault and provided immediate medical assistance to the victim, identified as 37-year-old German Merino. Despite efforts to save him, Merino was later pronounced dead in the prison's triage and treatment area.
Authorities have reported that an improvised weapon was recovered at the scene, indicating the nature of the attack. In light of the severity of the incident, both Garcia and Cortez have been placed in restricted housing while the investigation is ongoing.
