EAST POINT, Ga. - Police in East Point shot a "mentally ill person" armed with a knife on Saturday afternoon, leading to the involvement of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). This incident occurred just before 4:30 p.m. at the Stonetree Apartments on Stone Road.

Officers were called to the scene after reports indicated the individual had taken narcotics and was threatening self-harm. Upon arrival, police attempted to employ de-escalation tactics, but the situation escalated when the individual became aggressive.

The person brandished a knife and threatened the officers. In response, police said they were forced to use their weapon, resulting in the individual being shot in the lower torso.

The individual was subsequently transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. Their condition has not been disclosed.

As is customary when an officer discharges their weapon, the GBI has assumed control of the investigation into the incident. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please reach out for help by calling or texting 988 or by visiting 988lifeline.org.
