Ashlen Zitel, 28, allowed her boyfriend, Austin Meyn, to suffocate their child by placing him face-down on a mattress. The shocking details emerged from an investigation revealing that Zitel was aware of the dangerous actions being taken but chose not to intervene. The child died on August 15, 2024, and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Beatrice Community Hospital.

According to reports, Meyn, frustrated by the baby's incessant crying, swaddled the infant in blankets and intentionally restricted his breathing in an attempt to silence him. Zitel's text messages indicated that she knew this was happening and raised no objections, even when informed about the detrimental effect on the baby’s oxygen levels. This tragic situation unfolded while Zitel was at work and ended in catastrophic consequences for the infant.

Upon learning that the baby was unresponsive, Zitel rushed home to perform CPR before calling emergency services. Paramedics arrived and transported the child to the hospital, but sadly, it was too late to save him. The autopsy later revealed several injuries consistent with severe abuse, including bruising and broken ribs.

Following a thorough police investigation, Zitel was charged with child abuse and later pled guilty in December 2024.
