WASHINGTON: An armed man was shot by the US Secret Service outside the White House early Sunday following a confrontation. The individual is now hospitalized, as confirmed in an official statement.

At the time of the incident, President Donald Trump was not present at the White House, having chosen to spend the weekend at his Florida residence.

On Saturday, local authorities alerted Secret Service officials about a possibly suicidal individual traveling from Indiana to Washington. The man's vehicle was located just a block from the White House.

When officers approached the man, he drew a firearm, prompting shots to be fired shortly after midnight local time.

The man was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital, though his condition remains unknown at this time.
