Secret Service agents shot a man during an armed confrontation near the White House early Sunday morning. The incident took place shortly after midnight on the west side of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, about a block away from the presidential residence, according to a statement from the agency reported by Fox News.
Prior to the confrontation, law enforcement had alerted the Secret Service about a suicidal individual believed to be traveling from Indiana to Washington, D.C. Agents located the man's parked vehicle near 17th and F Streets, NW. As they approached him, he displayed a firearm, prompting the armed altercation that resulted in the agents firing their weapons.
The man was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, although his condition remains unknown. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the Secret Service personnel involved in the incident.
In accordance with protocol, the investigation into the shooting has been handed over to the Metropolitan Police Department, which is the primary agency responsible for use-of-force incidents within the District of Columbia.
