US Secret Service shoots armed man near White House: spokesman

WASHINGTON: A man armed with a firearm was shot by US Secret Service agents near the White House late Saturday night. This incident occurred while President Donald Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. The agency confirmed that the man was hospitalized, though his condition remains unknown.
According to Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, no Secret Service personnel were injured during the confrontation. The statement was shared on social media, providing updates on the situation without revealing whether the White House or the president was the intended target of the suspect.
Local police had previously notified the Secret Service about a "suicidal" man traveling to Washington from Indiana. Around midnight, agents located the individual’s parked vehicle near 17th and F Streets, which is in close proximity to the White House.
Minutes later, the agents spotted a man who matched the description they had received. As they approached him, he allegedly brandished a firearm, leading to an armed confrontation during which shots were fired by the agents.
The suspect was subsequently transported to a local hospital, and his current medical status is not known. The Washington police department has since launched an investigation into the incident.
