Two individuals were charged following a violent confrontation with deputies during a traffic stop in Grayslake early Saturday morning. Maria Lara, 32, from Grayslake, faces several charges including aggravated battery to a peace officer and resisting arrest. Swayne Carranza, 38, from Round Lake Beach, was also charged with multiple offenses, including resisting arrest and aggravated speeding.

The incident began around 2 a.m. when a deputy observed Carranza's vehicle traveling without headlights. Upon attempting to initiate a traffic stop, Carranza accelerated to 80 miles per hour in a 45-mile zone before pulling into a driveway on Cambridge Drive, where the stop was conducted.

As the deputy approached, Carranza exited the vehicle aggressively and refused to comply with instructions. When deputies attempted to arrest him, he resisted and pulled away, prompting one deputy to deploy a stun gun to subdue him.

During the struggle, Lara, who was a passenger in the vehicle, emerged and interfered by kicking a deputy and also resisting arrest. She was subsequently arrested as well.

Carranza was processed at the jail and later released on pre-trial conditions, while Lara remains in custody awaiting her first court appearance. The Grayslake Police Department assisted the Lake County Sheriff's Office during the incident.
