Pair charged after fighting with deputies during traffic stop

Two individuals were charged following a confrontation with deputies during a traffic stop in Grayslake on Saturday morning. Maria Lara, 32, from Grayslake, faces multiple charges including aggravated battery to a peace officer and resisting arrest. Swayne Carranza, 38, from Round Lake Beach, was also charged with resisting arrest, aggravated speeding, and various traffic violations.
The incident began around 2 a.m. when a deputy noticed a vehicle without headlights near Washington Street and Lancer Lane. When the deputy attempted to make a traffic stop, the driver, Carranza, accelerated to 80 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone before pulling into a driveway on Cambridge Drive.
Upon exiting the vehicle aggressively, Carranza refused to follow the deputy's orders. As the deputy attempted to arrest him, Carranza resisted and attempted to pull away, prompting the use of a stun gun to subdue him.
During this altercation, Lara, who was a passenger in the vehicle, interfered with the arrest by kicking a deputy and resisting her own arrest. Both individuals were ultimately taken into custody.
Carranza was processed and later released on pre-trial conditions, while Lara remains in custody pending her first court appearance. The Grayslake Police Department provided assistance during the incident.
