Snow removal companies battle thieves as well as Mother Nature

DENVER -- Snow removal companies are grappling not only with challenging weather but also with a growing threat from thieves, making their operations increasingly difficult. Kim Jewel from Snow Management Services, in collaboration with the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado, spoke to Denver7 about the impact of equipment theft on the industry.
Jewel highlighted that theft isn't seasonal; thieves are targeting trucks, trailers, skid steers, and power tools year-round. For snow management firms, this issue is particularly pressing in winter, as they need to stage equipment on client properties for rapid response to snowstorms.
The methods employed by thieves have become more sophisticated, with some using drones to scout for vulnerable equipment. Jewel noted that many thieves possess insider knowledge, allowing them to pinpoint high-value items and circumvent security measures effectively. These criminals often come equipped with advanced tools, enabling them to cut locks, remove trailer doors, and disable GPS systems.
Vigilance is critical, and Jewel urges the community to report any suspicious activity, regardless of the time of day. Although most thefts occur at night, they can happen anytime, emphasizing the need for constant awareness.
Overall, the snow removal industry faces a dual challenge from both environmental elements and criminal activity, severely impacting operations and efficiency during the winter months.
