Iconic pet reindeer in Alaska falls mysteriously ill after someone tampers in his pen

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- An iconic reindeer known as Star, a beloved fixture in Anchorage's community, is currently fighting for his life after a mysterious illness followed tampering with his pen. The 8-year-old reindeer, who has participated in parades and been featured in reality shows, began suffering from pneumonia, digestive issues, and rapid weight loss after an unknown individual gained access to his enclosure.
Star's owner, Albert Whitehead, has been taking him to the veterinarian every other day in search of a cause for his distress. Veterinarian Sabrieta Holland has described Star's prognosis as "guarded," highlighting the severity of the reindeer's condition. The situation escalated when Star was found wandering downtown Anchorage, having escaped from his damaged pen.
Security footage revealed that a man used bolt cutters to remove locks from Star's pen and, on a subsequent night, sprayed unknown substances into the enclosure. Whitehead confronted the man, who claimed he was trying to help Star. However, Whitehead is concerned that the sprays, which might have been disinfectants, could have contributed to Star's deteriorating health.
The vet suggests that Star's pneumonia may have resulted from aspirating food from his stomach, possibly due to ingested foreign objects, a common issue in reindeers. While surgery to investigate possible blockages remains an option, the outcome is generally poor, especially in animals already showing signs of distress.
The bond between Whitehead and Star is deep, and the community is rallying to support them. The reindeer tradition in Anchorage, started by pioneers in the 1950s, has a legacy of beloved animals, emphasizing the significance of Star's well-being to both Whitehead and the residents of Anchorage.
