ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A beloved reindeer named Star is fighting for his life after falling mysteriously ill, prompting concern among his supporters in Alaska's largest city. The 8-year-old reindeer, known for participating in parades and visits from schoolchildren, has been struggling with pneumonia, digestion issues, and significant weight loss since someone tampered with his pen.

Star's owner, Albert Whitehead, has been diligently taking him to a veterinarian every other day, hoping to identify the cause of his symptoms. Veterinarian Sabrieta Holland has indicated that Star's prognosis remains "guarded." Star resides in a fenced pen at Whitehead's home, where reindeer have been kept for over 70 years. This tradition dates back to the 1950s when Anchorage pioneers brought reindeer to the city.

In January, an individual cut a hole in Star's pen, and shortly after, Star began exhibiting health problems. Police later found him wandering downtown and returned him home. Reviewing his security footage, Whitehead discovered that someone had used bolt cutters to break into the enclosure. The following night, a second incident occurred when a man sprayed an unknown substance into Star's pen and claimed he was trying to help.

Despite Whitehead's efforts to confront the intruder, both he and the police are unsure of the man's intentions or the nature of the substances used. While it remains unclear if the two incidents were connected, Whitehead believes the man's actions inadvertently harmed Star. The police have shared the surveillance footage on social media to seek identity leads, but no significant tips have emerged yet.

Star's health issues may result from inhaling harmful contents or suffering from a blockage in his stomach, potentially caused by ingesting foreign materials. With the average lifespan of a reindeer being about 15 years, the bond between Whitehead and Star is significant, making Star's well-being a source of great concern for his owner. The outcome remains uncertain as Whitehead weighs options for further medical intervention.
