Iconic pet reindeer in Alaska falls mysteriously ill after someone tampers in his pen

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A beloved reindeer named Star, who has become a local icon in Anchorage, is currently in critical condition after someone tampered with his pen. The 8-year-old reindeer has been experiencing severe health issues, including pneumonia, digestion problems, and rapid weight loss, prompting his owner, Albert Whitehead, to seek veterinary care every other day.
Star has lived in a fenced pen at Whitehead's home in downtown Anchorage, where he has been a cherished part of the community for over 70 years. Recently, however, a significant breach occurred when someone used bolt cutters to access the enclosure. Shortly after the intrusion, Star began to show signs of distress, leading Whitehead to suspect foul play.
In a shocking turn of events, security footage revealed a man spraying an unknown substance into Star's pen and hitting him in the face. When confronted by Whitehead, the man claimed he was trying to help, leaving Whitehead bewildered about the individual's intentions. Despite the man's possible good intentions, his actions have had dire consequences for Star’s health.
Veterinarian Sabrieta Holland has stated that Star's prognosis is "guarded," as the reindeer is now struggling with worsening pneumonia likely caused by inhaling harmful substances. Holland noted that while a blockage is a possibility, ingesting foreign objects like plastic bags is common among reindeer and could explain his chronic weight loss.
The bond between Whitehead and Star is profound, with both relying on each other for companionship and purpose. The legacy of the reindeer tradition in Anchorage began with pioneers in the 1950s, and Star is part of a lineage that has faced many challenges. As Whitehead continues to fight for Star’s recovery, the community holds its breath, hoping for a positive outcome amidst the uncertainty.
