Iconic pet reindeer in Alaska falls mysteriously ill after someone tampers in his pen

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- An iconic reindeer named Star, celebrated for his role in local parades and school visits, is currently battling severe health issues after someone tampered with his pen. The 8-year-old reindeer has been suffering from pneumonia, digestive problems, and significant weight loss since the incident. Owner Albert Whitehead has been tirelessly taking Star to the veterinarian for treatment and to uncover the cause of his distress.

Star resides in a fenced enclosure near downtown Anchorage, a location he has been in for decades, with a lineage of reindeer bearing his name that spans over seventy years. Recently, in January, an individual cut a hole in Star's fencing, spent five minutes with him, and left without explanation. Shortly after, Star exhibited concerning symptoms, leading Whitehead to worry that something harmful may have transpired during that time.

The situation escalated when Star was later found wandering downtown after escaping his enclosure. Security footage revealed a suspicious figure using bolt cutters to breach the locks. The next night, the same man returned, allegedly spraying unknown substances inside Star's pen. Despite Whitehead's confrontational attempts to stop him, the individual claimed he was "trying to help Star," leaving Whitehead confused and suspicious of his intentions.

Veterinarian Sabrieta Holland provided a guarded prognosis for Star, noting that his pneumonia could be related to inhalation issues tied to his digestive problems. There is a possibility of blockage in Star's stomach, which can often be caused by ingesting foreign objects, such as plastic bags. Surgery is a potential next step, but with a generally poor success rate, it poses a significant risk for Star's recovery.

The bond between Whitehead and Star is profound, with the reindeer playing a vital role in Whitehead's daily life and emotional well-being. Anchorage police are actively seeking information to identify the individual responsible for Star's distress, but so far, no significant leads have emerged.
