Star, a beloved reindeer in Anchorage, Alaska, is currently fighting for his life after mysteriously falling ill due to tampering with his pen. The 8-year-old reindeer, known for his appearances in parades and visits from schoolchildren, has been stricken with pneumonia, digestive issues, and rapid weight loss. His owner, Albert Whitehead, has been taking him to the veterinarian every other day in search of a diagnosis and treatment.

Star's troubles began in January when someone cut a hole in his fenced enclosure and spent time inside before fleeing the scene. Shortly after, he started exhibiting stomach problems and significant weight loss. Concerns escalated when, on February 20, police found Star wandering downtown and returned him home. Surveillance footage revealed a man attempted to remove padlocks from Star’s pen, leading to the reindeer's unexpected adventure in the city.

The following night brought further anxiety when the same man, disguised with a scarf, was seen spraying unknown substances into Star’s pen and even striking him in the face. Whitehead confronted the individual, who claimed he was trying to help Star, although his actions have since raised suspicions about the effects of the substances on the reindeer’s health. Police have circulated the surveillance video in hopes of identifying the man, but no viable leads have emerged.

Star's condition has deteriorated, and veterinarians suspect he may have ingested something harmful. His pneumonia might stem from inhaling contents from his stomach, potentially exacerbated by the sprays used. While surgery is an option to investigate any blockages, the prognosis remains poor, even for healthy reindeer.

The bond between Whitehead and Star is significant, with Star playing a crucial role in Whitehead’s daily life. Over the decades, the reindeer has become a cherished part of Anchorage’s culture, following the tradition established by the city’s pioneers. The average reindeer lives around 15 years, but Star’s predecessors have experienced a range of lifespans, making the current situation all the more poignant for Whitehead and the community.
