Iconic pet reindeer in Alaska falls mysteriously ill after someone tampers in his pen

In Anchorage, Alaska, a beloved reindeer named Star is battling severe health issues after a troubling incident involving tampering with his pen. Star, an 8-year-old reindeer known for participating in parades and school visits, has been suffering from pneumonia, digestive problems, and significant weight loss. His owner, Albert Whitehead, is dedicated to his care, taking him to a veterinarian every other day to seek answers about his deteriorating condition.

The troubling events began in early January when someone cut a hole in Star's pen and spent time inside before fleeing. Shortly after this intrusion, Star exhibited concerning symptoms, prompting Whitehead to closely examine security footage that revealed a man using bolt cutters to access Star's pen. In a disturbing twist, the following night, this same individual was seen spraying an unknown substance into Star’s pen and even hitting the reindeer in the face with it. The man's actions confused Whitehead, who confronted him about the inappropriate treatment of Star.

Veterinarian Sabrieta Holland has labeled Star's prognosis as "guarded." She suspects that the pneumonia may have resulted from Star inhaling stomach contents due to chronic regurgitation. Additionally, concerns remain that he may have ingested something harmful while he was loose, as it is not uncommon for reindeer to have health issues from foreign objects like plastic bags.

The bond between Whitehead and Star is profound, with Whitehead’s daily routine centered around taking care of the reindeer. Holland emphasizes the emotional impact losing Star would have on Whitehead, describing their relationship as "quite significant and precious." The two have been companions for many years, highlighting the deep connection that exists between them.

As the community rallies around Star, Anchorage police are seeking help identifying the man from the surveillance footage in hopes of preventing future harm.
