In Anchorage, Alaska, an iconic reindeer named Star is fighting for his life after experiencing a sudden decline in health due to suspicious tampering in his pen. The 8-year-old reindeer, who has a history of being the center of attention in parades and school visits, has developed pneumonia, digestive issues, and significant weight loss. His owner, Albert Whitehead, has been diligently seeking veterinary care, taking Star to the veterinarian every other day in hopes of uncovering the cause of his ailments.

The trouble began in early January when someone cut a hole in Star's enclosure and spent a brief time with him. Shortly after this incident, Star displayed troubling symptoms, leading to his eventual wandering around downtown Anchorage, where police found him and returned him home. Reviewing security footage, Whitehead discovered a man using bolt cutters to escape with Star, and the reindeer later followed him into the neighborhood he is familiar with from daily walks.

The situation escalated when Whitehead caught a masked man on video spraying an unknown substance into Star's pen and even hitting the reindeer in the face twice with it. When Whitehead confronted the individual, the man claimed he was trying to "help" Star, leaving Whitehead puzzled about his intentions. Suspecting the sprays were disinfectants, Whitehead believes the stranger’s uninvited actions may have contributed to Star’s deteriorating condition.

Veterinarian Sabrieta Holland has described Star's prognosis as "guarded," indicating serious concerns about his health. The reindeer’s pneumonia could have stemmed from inhaling the contents of his stomach, exacerbated by the sprays. With indications that there may be a blockage in his stomach, surgery could be the next step, but outcomes are generally poor in such cases. Whitehead's bond with Star is described as significant, with Star providing him companionship and routine.

Star is part of a long-standing tradition in Anchorage, with his lineage dating back to the 1950s when the first reindeer were brought to the city. Whitehead has been caring for Star since 2002. The average lifespan of a reindeer is around 15 years, but the history of the previous Stars has been both long and tragic. As Whitehead and the community strive to uncover the truth behind the incidents affecting Star, the hope remains for his recovery and continued companionship.
