Montana woman charged with aggravated animal cruelty after 27 dogs seized from property

KALISPELL -- Candy Evans, a 55-year-old from Coram, is facing charges of Felony Aggravated Animal Cruelty after authorities found 27 dogs living in deplorable conditions at her property. Officers had previously been called to her location for various dog-related incidents since August 2024, but despite numerous requests, Evans refused to give up her dogs.
When law enforcement visited her property, they discovered that the dogs appeared malnourished and lethargic. A veterinarian, who assessed the situation on March 13, indicated that none of the dogs had been vaccinated for rabies or registered in Flathead County. Conditions on the property were dire, with dogs living amidst feces, urine, and debris, lacking access to clean water.
The situation escalated to the point where it was determined that the dogs were suffering from severe neglect, and the tragic death of a puppy was attributed to inadequate care and nutrition. In response to the crisis, the Flathead County Animal Shelter acted swiftly, facilitating the transfer of 16 adoptable dogs to other shelters across the state to accommodate the newly seized animals.
Currently, the animal shelter continues to look after the 27 dogs, which are not available for adoption while the legal proceedings unfold. The report has raised awareness about the challenges faced by local shelters due to the influx of animals in emergency situations.
Community members interested in supporting the care of the seized dogs can make donations to Flathead Shelter Friends, a nonprofit organization committed to enhancing the welfare of shelter animals. Contributions will directly assist in the care and support of these dogs during their time at the shelter.
