A potentially dangerous situation was averted at Pownal Elementary School when a student brought an unloaded handgun and 67 rounds of ammunition to school. The incident began when the student shared a message about the weapon on social media, which was seen by other students.

Upon seeing the message, students acted quickly by informing their teachers, who immediately followed school safety procedures. Thanks to their swift actions, no harm came to anyone at the school.

School safety officials and law enforcement responded promptly to the situation. The student was safely removed from class, and the handgun along with the ammunition was confiscated from their backpack.

A deputy from the Bennington County Sheriff's Office is currently leading the investigation to ensure that there is no further threat to the school community.

Authorities are encouraging vigilance among students and staff, urging everyone to report any suspicious activity, either online or in person, to a teacher, school staff member, or another trusted adult.
