Student brought unloaded gun to school, according to Bennington Co. Sheriff's Office

A student at Pownal Elementary School was found to have an unloaded 9 mm handgun and 67 rounds of ammunition in their backpack on Wednesday, according to Sheriff James Gulley Jr. of Bennington County. The incident came to light when the student shared a message about the weapon on social media, prompting fellow students to alert teachers.

Teachers acted swiftly by following established safety procedures and sought immediate assistance, which Gulley credited with averting a potential crisis. Their quick thinking ensured that the situation did not escalate, allowing authorities to manage it efficiently.

Sheriff's deputies responded promptly and safely removed the student from the classroom while locating the firearm and ammunition in the student's backpack. The investigation is now being handled by a deputy from the Sheriff's Department to ensure the safety of the school community.

Gulley emphasized the importance of communication among students and staff, noting that the actions of those who reported the situation were crucial in preventing harm. He reiterated the significance of speaking up when something feels off, whether online or in person.
