Parent reacts after police say Vermont student brought unloaded gun, ammo to school

POWNAL, Vt. (WPTZ) -- A concerning incident unfolded at Pownal Elementary School when a student was removed from class for bringing an unloaded handgun and ammunition to school. Natasha Hoag, a parent of two students at the school, shared the emotional impact the event had on her daughter, who was in the same class as the student involved. Hoag described her daughter as feeling "sad and mad," especially because she knew the child.
The Bennington County Sheriff's Department reported that the student brought a 9mm handgun and 67 rounds of ammunition to school, and communicated about it on social media. Two fellow students spotted the message and promptly informed their teachers, who then contacted law enforcement as per school procedures. Fortunately, no injuries occurred, and the police were able to seize the handgun along with the ammunition from the student's backpack.
Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to ensure the safety of the school environment moving forward. The Sheriff’s Department emphasized the importance of vigilance and community involvement, encouraging individuals to speak up if they notice anything that might pose a danger to others.
In addition to the immediate response, the incident reminded gun owners about the critical necessity of securely storing firearms. Manchester Police Department Patrolman Derek Osgood advised that guns should be locked away separately from ammunition, ensuring all locks are tamper-resistant, especially in homes with children.
Despite the unsettling event, Hoag expressed her confidence in the district's response and continued to view Pownal as a safe community for her children. She acknowledged that any necessary adjustments to safety protocols would likely be taken seriously in the future, reinforcing her belief in the overall security of the school. Counselors were made available to help both students and staff process the incident as the investigation continues under the direction of the Bennington County Sheriff.
