Missing Rhode Island woman on autism spectrum found curled up in SUV; caregiver charged

A Rhode Island community is in a state of mixed emotions after a woman on the autism spectrum, Linda DaLomba, was found safe after being reported missing. Savong Sam, a maintenance worker, made the surprising discovery when he found DaLomba curled up in the back of an SUV he was about to work on. Initially thinking it was a child, he quickly realized it was the woman the police had been searching for and immediately contacted law enforcement.

Detectives confirmed that DaLomba, 45, was found in good spirits, but the situation remains concerning as she is non-verbal and unable to share details about her ordeal. The circumstances surrounding her five-day absence raise many questions, particularly how she ended up inside the SUV and how she managed to survive without essential insulin, which she needs every two hours.

The caregiver responsible for her safety, 43-year-old Roberta Gerard, has been arrested and faces multiple charges related to abuse and neglect, including a felony for the exploitation of an adult with severe impairment. This situation has left both the police and the community searching for answers regarding the care DaLomba received prior to her disappearance.

Family members expressed their relief at DaLomba's recovery while also expressing outrage toward Gerard. During an appearance in Kent County Court, DaLomba's loved ones confronted Gerard, voicing their feelings of betrayal after having trusted her care for the vulnerable woman.
