Sioux City man sentenced to federal prison on gun charge

A Sioux City man, Jamiah Burton, was sentenced to five years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm, as confirmed by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Burton, 30, had previously pleaded guilty in August to the charge of possession of a firearm by a felon. His criminal background includes multiple felony convictions, notably for home invasions and DUI offenses.
The incident that led to his conviction occurred on January 19, 2024, in a Sioux City bar, where Burton behaved aggressively towards a female bartender. He repeatedly entered the restricted area behind the bar, physically assaulted her, and brandished a loaded gun, making threats against both himself and the bartender. The altercation escalated when he stole a bottle of alcohol, but the bartender managed to outsmart him. She locked the door behind him and called 911 after hiding in the bathroom.
Law enforcement responded within approximately 16 minutes and found Burton's vehicle in South Sioux City, stuck in snow. Inside the vehicle, officers discovered several open containers of alcohol, including a bottle of tequila that matched the one reported stolen from the bar.
Burton's violent behavior and illegal possession of a firearm were serious violations under federal law, reflecting the potential dangers posed by individuals with a history of criminal activity. His prior convictions and the nature of the recent offense warranted a lengthy prison sentence, emphasizing the judicial system's commitment to curbing gun violence.
This case highlights ongoing issues of public safety and crime in Sioux City, prompting discussions about community safety and law enforcement's role in preventing violent incidents. The U.S. Attorney's Office continues to focus on curbing illegal firearm possession, especially by individuals with a history of violent crimes.
